According to the 2019 Rise Together: A Blueprint for Reducing Poverty in Franklin County report from the Franklin County Board of Commissioners:
- Franklin County’s poverty rate is 16.7%
- For African Americans, the rate is higher at 29.9%.
- For children in Franklin County, the rate is 25%.
When we add the residents right at the threshold of the poverty line, the poverty rate almost doubles. We estimate that there are well over 100,000 school-aged children in Franklin County who live in poverty.
Some children are truant from school because they do not have adequate and/or clean clothing to attend school. Having clean, quality clothing supports a child’s success in school by building their confidence, sense of self-worth and contributes to their mental health.
If you were asked to close your eyes and envision what you would wear to deliver a major presentation, wear to a job interview, or any other event where the stakes really count, you would be able to call to mind a power suit. Yet, thousands of children in Franklin County cannot do the same.
Clothing insecurity is becoming a rising issue for working families as prices rise across the board, and more and more schools transition to uniform and dress code policies. Most of the required dress code schools insist upon polos and khakis, which add to costs as those items are harder to find and more expensive than a cotton tee shirt and jeans or leggings.
Charity Newsies, on the front lines of clothing insecurity for kids going to school:
- has clothed over 800,000 kids since its origin in 1907,
- sees the trend and need for clothing for kids rising in an alarming way.
Each child served by Charity Newsies receives:
- $150 worth of new school clothing, including a coat, hat, gloves, underwear for the week, six pairs of socks, three pairs of pants and three shirts.
- If the child goes to a school with a uniform, Charity Newsies provides a uniform voucher.
- If a child goes to a school with a specific dress code, they receive dress code compliant pants and shirts.
In 2023, we served over 18,000 children for the school year through our open application process to families in need.
Year-round, we serve families without housing or entering shelters as well as families affected by domestic violence, natural disasters, fires, etc., through a variety of community partners.
Your support of Charity Newsies makes a tremendous difference to so many children in need. With your support we can ensure that our children have the clothing they need for a successful educational experience.
